This recipe is savory ground beef, vegetables, herbs, and then topped with a smooth layer of creamy mashed sweet potatoes. It combines the heartiness of a classic shepherd’s pie with the irresistible sweetness potatoes.

We’ve added dried cranberries into the mix for little bursts of tangy sweetness in each and every bite. This recipe is sweet and savory, healthy comfort food at its finest.

One recipe that holds a special place in my heart is my grandmother’s traditional shepherd’s pie. Growing up, her shepherd’s pie was the epitome of comfort food–it was so incredibly delicious. And her in her words, “But oh, so easy to make!”

While my grandmother’s recipe was perfect as it was, I prefer sweet potatoes in this traditional dish over regular mashed potatoes. This recipe is the perfect melody of sweet and savory in one dish.

To make this easy and delicious sweet potato shepherd’s pie recipe you’ll need a few ingredients that you can get at almost any grocery store or even online!

  • sweet potatoes
  • butter
  • salt and pepper
for the filling
  • onion
  • garlic
  • ground beef, chicken, or turkey
  • frozen mixed vegetables
  • dried cranberries
  • tomato paste
  • smoked paprika
  • dried thyme
  • beef or chicken broth

how to make sweet potato shepherd’s pie

Preheat your oven to 420 degrees F

Boil the sweet potato cubes in a pot of salted water until tender, about 10-15 minutes, or until tender. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.

Mash the potatoes with butter, salt, and pepper until smooth and creamy.

In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until slightly browned. Remove any excess fat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Saute for about 3-5 minutes, until onions are softened.

Stir in the frozen mixed vegetables, dried cranberries, tomato paste, and spices. Season with salt and pepper to taste; add in the broth. Simmer for 10-12 minutes, until the mixture thickens slightly.

Transfer the meat and vegetable mixture to a baking dish. Spread the mashed sweet potatoes evenly over the top.

Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until sweet potato topping is just beginning to brown. Allow the pie to cool a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!

  • 2 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into cubes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • salt and pepper, to taste

for the filling

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 bag frozen mixed vegetables
  • ¼ cup dried cranberries
  • ¼ cup tomato paste
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp ground thyme
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup broth

Instructions 

  • Preheat your oven to 420 degrees F
