As a busy mom and teacher, you’d think my days are packed enough without adding more to the calendar, but when it comes to celebrating holidays, I can’t resist! I adore creating fun food ideas that my family can enjoy together. These simple Day of the Dead Skull Pizzas are a beloved family tradition that we always look forward to.

a delicious family tradition

These yummy pizzas originated during a lively Halloween party a few years ago–a gathering rich with laughter and, of course, delicious food. My mother-in-law and I decided to get creative in the kitchen, combining our love for Halloween festivities with a nod to our cultural roots. We whipped up these Day of the Dead pizzas as a fun way to honor the memory of loved ones during this special time of the year.

Little did we know that they would become a cherished family tradition!

Each year, the family eagerly gathers around the kitchen as we craft these festive pizzas, layering them with vibrant colors and flavors, and making delightful memories in the process. It’s an easy and engaging activity for everyone involved, especially as Halloween gives way to the Dia de los Muertos celebrations!

what is the day of the dead / Dia de los muertos ?

Before we dive into the pizza-making fun, let’s take a moment to talk about the significance of Dia de los Muertos. Celebrated primarily in Mexico and among Mexican communities worldwide, this holiday honors and remembers deceased loved ones.

It is believed that during these two days, the spirits of the deceased return to the living to be reunited with their families. The holiday is a beautiful blend of celebration, remembrance, and joy, featuring colorful altars, offerings, and, of course, food!

Families create intricate sugar skulls, vibrant marigold decorations, and delightful dishes to welcome their loved ones back to the world of the living. Growing up, it was always a joy to participate in the festivities, but now, as a parent, instilling this tradition in my children has become one of the most rewarding experiences.
